Should I Tell My Boss That I May Have Broken Something At Work?

I work for a commercial cleaning company. I was  cleaning an internet provider company. I was taking out trashes. I was in an office and accidentally bumped a router off of a desk. I picked it up and put it back where it was. It didn't look broken. There are cameras in the building, but I'm pretty certain that there were none pointed at me. I could just say nothing, because even if it is broken then they won't know it was me, but the honorable thing to do would may be telling someone. What do you think?

How many days ago did this happen

Of course you should

Do the honourable thing, and report the accident. If the router is broken, you shouldn't be asked to pay for the damage. Accidents will happen.

Own up... though it would have been better to do that at the time (then the  router could have been checked right away).

if it is visibly broken, then they may look at their cameras to see what happened. But what the heck, if it was an accident it was an accident - how exactly would you be expected to check it was working?

I'd just let sleeping dogs lie on this one. If they ask, just say you picked it up and could see no obvious damage.

Why do you think it broken ? IMO if you have no evidence then you have no need to report anything. If anyone asks you if you know what happened to the router as it isn't working, just be honest. Otherwise, it fell, you put it back, not had any reason to think of it since.

I'm going to visit the company on Monday, and tell them what happened.

OK. If the router was broken, this would probably have been noticed straight away. It was probably OK.

I would keep schtum, otherwise some stuck-up jobsworth will probably try to get you into trouble.

How long ago did this happen? If it is still working no worries

Question Author

It happened after all of the workers were gone, so no one will notice until Monday

I think it is best to come clean. If you explain what happened and apologise they will likely put it down to an accident and it will go no further.

Being me, I would tell them.  It was an accident.  Mention it to them, saying you inspected it and it seemed OK but they better check it out.  No problems.  Stop worrying.
