Lost Debit Card Replacement

Someone I know lost their debit card on Sunday.  She rang the bank and cancelled it and the card was subsequently found and returned to her.  The bank told her a replacement would be sent by post within 7-10 days.  Not prepared to wait, she went straight to her local branch as soon as they opened this morning and says a replacement was 'printed out' in 5 minutes and given to her.    I'm struggling to believe that.  Is it possible?

Why would she need a replacement if she got the old one back - just ask the bank to un-cancel it.

Hard to believe I lost mine awhile back and went into the bank but certainly never offered me that just cancelled it.  I had to wait for new arrival. I too found my card (down back of car seat )

Don't think cards are printed by banks, there done by outside companies with very tight security.

The last time I needed a replacement, it took about 5 days. I don't see how a plastic card could be replaced there and then...the name and numbers need to be punched/impressed. Do banks now have the equipment? Portable card printers? 🤣 Considering they are all closing, I'd think the less they have to do, the better.

nicebloke, that's exactly what I said.  I simply cannot believe this.

What abut the chip and the new PIN number and confirmation of identity and all that?  It's not just a matter of printing a plastic card anyway is it.

I find that hard to believe they have a stack of blanks they can use to input personal details and then emboss the card with the name, account and card details.

I saw a tv program on this very subject some time back, it was interesting in the way they were made. And nothing to do with the bank.

Do you know which bank she uses?

Metro.

Could it be possible that, when found, the card was handed in at her local branch, so when she went along they gave it back and reversed the cancellation and the re-order.

No I am waiting for mine still

The finder didn't hand it to the bank.  She lost her bag with cards and money in it but her address was also in there so the nice finder brought it back to her.

Once a card is cancelled and a request for a new one has gone in, it cant be reversed. The system would be all over the show if they did such. They stick to strick rules.

We have an account with Metro Bank. We rarely use our debit card and, because of lack of usage, mine had expired even though the date on it was still valid. We went into the bank and they printed us a new up-to-date one there and then  -tokk about 10-15 minutes. We happened to go into the branch last week to get some change. I was sitting waiting for my wife when I overheard a lady telling her friend she was waiting for them to print her a new card. It seems to be the way Metro Bank works.

Question Author

That's what I would have said but she says they've given her a card with the same pin as the old one.  I can't figure out what's going on.

(Some) debit / credit cards don't have an embossed number now (just printed on the back).

^That was to Nicebloke.

bhg, I'm gobsmacked!  I've never heard of it.  If that's how it works security seems very lax.

Question Author

I wonder why they bothered to print a new card if she's got the old one and the pin is the same?  It doesn't make sense.

Remind me not to use Metro bank - that sounds very dodgy.
