I believe that Banks are under some obligation to offer a very basic account to everyone. However, these are usually personal accounts and not business accounts.

Is the cheque payable to you or a business? If it's payable to you, open a basic personal account and pay it in. If it is payable to a business, why did you accept it knowing you had no account to pay it into? Can the drawer changethe payee to your name?

Have you tried Alliance & Leicester? I can't guarantee that they'll give you an account but, if you speak to one of their advisors (rather than just filling in the form), you might be able to persuade them to take you on:

You might consider a business savings account.

However the normal method of withdrawal from these is to transfer the money to a current account, not necessarily with the same bank, so it might still leave you with a problem.

Try the Abbey. They have a basic no frills account which I would assume would be quite easy to have set up.
