Asking price of property
7 Answers
Hello you knowledgeable people, I'm trying to find out the asking price of a property which has subsequently been sold at lower than the asking price. The problem is, the estate agent won't tell me what the asking price was (I know how to find out the actual price paid). Is this data really that confidential? Is there any other way of finding out the answer ? Thanks for your help in advance.

I would try some sort of subterfuge like phoning up on a day when the agent you spoke to wasn't there and speaking to someone else and pretending to enquire if it was still on the market .. and saying something like "oh I know it was on at 230 or whatever" and they might say "yes it was on at such and such" ...... you never know ... but it might only be a small estate agent.
I would agree with dzug's suggestion of referring to back issues of your local property paper. If you know when the place was on the market and it wasn't too long ago it should be too hard to get the publisher's to send you a copy (they might charge though).
I wouldn't have said the info was that confidential but the estate agent might not want to make it known that the owners had to take big cut on the asking price. It doesn't make him look very competant for pricing the property too high in the first place!
