tax credit overpayments of �10,000

does anyone know how long i can take and how much at the most i would have to pay monthly to the tax credit dept to pay this amount off. what if i offered �10 a week for instance - do you think that would be accepted ???? couldnt afford much more than this- any replies welcome - and before you say it I think i do actually owe this amount due to my stupidity and ignorance....

That seems are huge amount to be overpaid, are you 100% sure they are correct.


I would say if you really can't afford any more than �10 a week they should accept it but its going to take you a very long time to clear. (as I am sure you are already aware)


Why do you say your stupidity and ignorance. Maybe thay might have been at fault somewhere along the line. What about a chat with someone from the CAB. This must be a big burden for you.

You probably already know they try to get you to pay it all back within one year. In practice you will have to negotiate a repayment arrangement with them. To do this you will have to produce a financial statement showing all your income and essential expenditure.


I agree with willspal - go to CAB and get them to double check that you do owe it all and that none of it is due to a Tax Credit Office error. CAB can also help you with the financial statement.
