The matrimonial home is to be transferred to me - a consent order on divorce. Is this a simple process that I can do myself?

If there is no mortgage you can DIY. Speak to your local District Land Registry Office and they will guide you through - it is only a couple of forms and a total fee of about 60. You will need a Stamp Duty Land Tax Certificate also - the LR will tell you how. If there is a mortgage all of the transfer will have to be done by the Lender which they will call "Transfer of Equity" and charge you 500 - 800.
If it costs you 100 to get a solicitor to di it, its 100 well spent. Remember that you are not just paying for the conveyance, you are paying for the additional indemnity insurance that goes with it in case of any errors. I have a legal background, and would certainly know how to do a simple deed transfer or lodge an intrest in a property - I would never do it though!
The system has been much improved and simplified in recent years, erismus. What Barry Parsons is seeking to do is not a conveyance but only Change the Title, that is change the name on the Register at the Land Registry. It involves a couple of simple LR Forms which can be downloaded from their website and an SDLT Form. Several parts of the LR system have been deliberately simplified so that people can DIY without solicitors and this is one of them. Unfortunately solicitors have complicated matters in such a way for people with a mortgage that solicitors have to be employed which whacks up a bill of several hundred pounds. I do not know of any solicitor who will do a conveyance for 100. All solicitors around here charge 250 ph and the minimum is 300 + disbursements + VAT for a simple conveyance.
