At the age of 29 I've never had a credit card, overdraft, loan, hire purchase etc, so if I applied for a mortgage will I have any credit history at all? I only have a basic bank account and a savings account.

Well, you do have a 'credit history' then. Albeit not a comprehensive one. The history of your current account (do you go overdrawn, do you manage it sensibly) would be referred to by your mortgage company. Not having the other things might make it more difficult to get a mortgage, but not impossible.
You will prove to be something of an enigma to lenders but It should be possible. You own bank may be a good starting point, if only to get some sort of reference.
Go and get some credit to build up a profile, even if you don't need the credit. You need to demonstrate to any potential future lenders that you can honour your obligations. At this moment in time, they cannot assess whether or not you are a safe bet.
Other things will aid your credit score, such as being on the voter's roll (at the correct address) so make sure these are in place. Then getting credit cards and conducting them well will build up your profile.
Have you got a mobile phone on contract? that counts as credit

No contract mobile, no credit cards, no catalogues, no overdraft facilities, no student loan and none of the household bills are in my name!
(My dad got into a huge mess with credit when I was little and it put me off for life!)
I've never had any of the things you describe and I got a mortgage ok with my own bank.

Seven years later and I've just remortgaged and when the financial adviser did my credit check he said I've got the highest credit rating he's ever seen in his career as I still don't have any form of credit apart from my mortgage and a contract mobile phone.
I had a loan once (in 1983!) and no other credit, but I've never has a problem getting a mortgage.
