How do I work out the VAT element if I've only got the gross amount and the VAT is 9%

Or alternatively if you are not online at the time you calculate it thus:

Gross amount divided by (100 + VAT rate) multiply the VAT rate

In your example, Gross rate divided by 109 times 9
