What are the origins of proverbs?

Can anyone here think of any good proverbs? What are their meanings? Can you think of any Chinese proverbs, in particular?

Their origins are obscure, since anyone can make one up. If it becomes popular, and spreads, it can end up being adopted into the language. Their meanings should be self-evident, but may be become less so as languages change over time.
