A young relative of ours has moved up to Scotland and has begun working for a large sport store chain. He has been told that he cannot get his wages paid until he has a bank account. He is not in possession of any photo id and therefore is having difficulty getting a bank account. Any ideas anyone?

I'm afraid he will have to apply for either a provisional driving licence or passport.

In the short term he may be able to have the wages paid into the account of a relative and have the relative give him the money.
I may be out of touch with rules on proof of id but since the employer insist on this method of payment would their bank give him a basic account account?
Since the ID is really for money laundering avoidance it is possible to get an exemption. Banks have misinterpreted the rules. He must at least have proof of address via a letter from his landlord and he must have a National Insurance Card as everyone is issued with one now. Applying for a passport is the best route to go as it will be necessary for many other things as well. I was able to apply for an exemption for my mother who does not have a passport or driving licence or even a firearms certificate ( thank god! ) so it is possible.
