i only get a pension paid into my halifax account i have to pay my bills with it, the bank have charged me twice for the same direct debit being recalled can they do this and can i ask for the charges to be frozen untill i can pay them? as i have no money.
Unfortunately most Bank will charge twice for the same DD, if it is 'bounced' twice. And most of them won't freeze charges just because you have no money. You should cancel your direct debits ASAP so that they don't bounce again and you get charged more.
Speak to your Bank, they may be more sympathetic than you think.
It's right that they can still charge you - but, for instance, I can't afford my bank charges this month, so I rang them and explained my circumstances. They have, as a result, put the fees on to next month's account, so I will have no fees this month. In the meantime, I am claiming my charges back for the last 6 years, as the rates are extortionate in proprortion to what the bank *actually* pays in admin costs. I'll post the website for the letter next
Good luck,

cullycoating - Banks and building societies have been given permission by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to postpone claims for repayment of fees pending the outcome of the test case between the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and the banks.
thanks guy's things are becoming a little clearer. the charges started because the Halifax paid a cancelled DD of 100 this had been cancelled weeks ago and had never really been activated but they tried to con me out of my money and the bank didn't check with me. so of course i couldn't pay my bills, instead of telling me as they know i'm dissabled and can't get in, iv'e asked for online banking for ever, they just kept on charging me for failed DD's so kind and caring!
