Is it possible to open a bank account in Spain without living there, I intend to move there in about 5 years.

We did on a recent visit. With proof of identity and some cash - I have monthly statements to a UK address.

I also believe the Halifax bank have branches in Spain and you can open one from the UK - I've not investigated this option
I think you have to obtain a fiscal number from the police.
when I was in the canaries you needed their equivelent of an NI number and I heard horror stories of money disappearing from accounts. I used a nationwide flex account, free withdrawels str8 from my UK account
Royal Bank of Scotland have branches in Spain as well, you may not need to open a local account, check which banks have a wide range of branches in the area that you are planning to move to.
Royal Bank of Scotland use Bank of Santander, but Barclays have Spanish branches.
