How long is a signed and dated cheque valid for?

6 months I think.
Should be six months but i recently took a number of cheques to a bank that were over 6 months old and they were cleared. 
It is six months.  Most banks don't do a physical check of cheques under about �5K and therefore probably won't notice the date on the cheque.  However if the person who wrote the cheque subsequently noticed it appear on his/her statement and complained to the Bank that it was out of date, they would have to reimburse.
