Im 18 and Im struggling to find a relatively cheap car insurance!  I understand my premiums arent going to be cheap, but I really need them to be at least reasonable!!  Im only going to be driving a 1992 metro, but y premiums are coming out at about 1000 a year on third party fire and theft.  This seems a little high, so I was wondering who everyone is insured with, and who the best insurers are that theyve found? Thanks everyone! (By the way Im not expecting any miracles! :( )

Forgot to mention that Im female, dont know how much difference that makes.........

my 18 year old colleague at workwas driving a 94 astra automatic - her premiums were around 700 a year with elephant.co.uk

All I can say is call literally EVERY company - very boring but very worth it. I am 31 with full no claims, and every year when my renewal is near I call up loads of companies. I just get to the point where everyone is quoting almost the same (around 300 last year) when someone quotes well below that).

Hope that helps

You won't find cheap car insurance - you are 18 and therefore you cost the insurance companies the most in claims: unfortunately, no matter how good a driver you may be, your age group are, statistically, poor drivers.

Just be thankful you are not male: personally, I don't think young men should be allowed to drive until they are at least 21 - young men are too immature to be in control of a vehicle.

You don't mention what you do but if you are studying you might want to try Endsleigh. They used to provide student car insurance significantly cheaper than others.
This may not help you but it might help others. A student of mine bought a new car because the deal included free insurance.
Just done the same thing for my daughter, 1991 1.4 astra just under 700. They also do a 10month insurance so you can get a full years no claims earlier. Diamond Insurance (On-Line is even cheaper) and they were extremely helpful on the phone. Direct Line, Churchills and "quote me happy" Norwich Union were between 2 and 3 times higher.
Don't be fooled by the TV ad's. The ones on their all specialise in low risk groups, who are old and have full no claims discount, one of the ways they can offer cheap insurance is by having very high premiums for high risk groups such as yourself. I think its a case of ringing round as many as you can. The local yellow pages always seems to be a good place to start as local insurance brokers can offer good quotes.
There is a brilliant website www.confused.com which searches loads of the major insurers saving you a whole bunch of phone calls. i got my 1st ever car insurance from axa via this website last year and the premium was honestly 100s less than some of the other quotes. if i remember rightly they also come back to you within an hour and list all the quotes for comparison. definately worth a go. good luck.

Hi nicnicnic.

I'm a 20 year old male and my insurance premiums are even worse!  For Third Party, Fire & Theft I've been quoted 1100 on a S Reg Clio.  Being a young male driver, apparantly I'm a "boy racer"!

I managed to get Fully Comprehensive insurance from the Halifax for 1380. An extra 200 quid, but if I have an accident that is my fault, at least I'm covered.  Give them a try.  Also, have you tried the female only insurance groups?  I have no idea what they are called but there is one exclusively for woman drivers.

Re: flanker's comments: I think you're a very rude, judgemental person to think that every male under the age of 21 are too irresponsible to drive.  I have no interest in 'wheelspins', no interest in buying 'phat speakers with pumpin bass', and certainly no intention of drag racing other boyracers in supermarket car parks at 1am.

I just want the opportunity to drive myself safely from one destination to the other without being tarred with the same "boyracer" brush.
