About two years ago, my bank account became heavily overdrawn. They wrote to me asking me to repay the debt. I sent them a cheque drawn on an account I had with another bank. I have recently applied for a credit card, which was declined. Are these two events linked?

assuming the overdraft was unauthorised as they wrote to you then yes that will be a blemish on your credit record.

How long will it remain on my credit record?
GKW, you need to get a company like Experian to run a credit report for you, it is really cheap to do, then you will get a report showing exactly where your problem lies. You can then see if there is anything you can do about it. There are a number of reasons why you may have been refused credit, it's hard for us to say but fears about you overstretching yourself financially is influential in companies' decisions.
at least 6 years.
