Statutory Sick Pay

I am off work poorly and because i have been there less than 6 months i am not entitled to sick pay. I have been told that i can get Statutory sick pay off the government is this right? and if so how do i go about it? Thanks

Hi Beverly sorry to hear that you are poorly (hope u get better soon).

i am not sure how ssp works tbh, however my recruitment agency paid me one month ssp when i was off for nearly two months, although i only worked for just over 3 months. i was quite suprised they paid me even though i only been there for that amount of time. i guess its diff t & c from different companies

i hope someone can give you a proper answer to this. mayb you can go to c.a.b - job centre for advise?

Thanks whitebears... cant really afford to be off sick but i have suspected swine flu so cant really be at work

Hey not sure how ssp works for shorter term sickness, but when I was off for a month, I got around £75 a week...

Your employer is obliged to pay you SSP (which the employer can then reclaim from HMRC) from the 4th day of your illness onwards. The current rate is £79.15 per week.

It is not called ssp anymore it is called ESA - Employment and Support Allowance - I believe !
