I think it identifies which branch your account is based in, mines 6 digits.
It is indeed a bank/building society branch identifier.
They are all six digits, 00-00-00.  The first two digits usually idenifty which Bank it belongs to, the rest identify the particular branch.
Agree with all answers - usually found in the top right-hand corner of your cheque.
