Stairlift Costs?

Hi, my parents health has deteriorated quite rapidly recently, they are 79 and 84, and look like they need help getting upstairs. Can anyone give me a rough ball park price I can expect to pay for a straight forward chairlift. No turns just straight up and down. TIA

I think stairlifts are VERY overpriced. I did one for my mother that was in a large victorian house with a couple of turns in the stairs and it cost about £5,000.

Sadly she died less than a month after it was put in and we could only sell it for £400.

Note Age Concern do have companies they work with so you dont get ripped off.

I think you lll be talking about £2,000 or thereabouts.

I believe Stannah buy back stairlifts like VHG's mothers, recondition them and re sell them. You might find that a bit cheaper

My parents paid about £1500 to have just a straight 13 step stairway covered. The chair moved at the top. It was also handy for taking laundry or heavier items up and down the stairs also. When my Dad died my Mum wanted rid of it. I think she ok got about £300-£400 for it. None of the charities wanted it because of PAT testing etc. but it served its purpose and was worth it.

My FIL just had a stairlift fitted. It's rented: £480 non-returnable deposit, and £40 per month, including installation and safety instruction.

contact your local Social Services for Adults. You can request an assessment for a Stair Lift by an OT (occupational Therapist). If they are eligible under the local authorities criteria, then an OT will go to the house to look at the feasibility. If they are eligible and Social Services are going to put them forward for one, they might be able to go through the Home Improvements Grant process which might give them some help with the cost. Beware though going this route will take time, 3-4 months because the OT has to obtain 3 quotes for the work and provision of the Stairlift and there will be a lot of form filling (by the OT). If you want one quick you can hire one. Please also be aware that you cannot claim for financial help with paying for a Stair Lift in retrospect. Hiring is quite cheap and the maintenance is included in the cost. If you get one privately or through Social Services the guarantees are limited and you then have to take out insurance to cover any faults.
