Hi, I am totally new here in England and was wondering if anybody could give me ideas about where to go to look for a place where I (single) could have a break for a week or so to somewhere where there are lots of trees and a stream/river and I could rent an old cottage/house or so where it is quiet, just to get away into nature a bit? At the moment I live in Manchester so anything closeby will be nice?

The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District are all fairly close to you

I am afraid you are coming in to high season now, so nowhere is going to be cheap, particulalry the lake district which is one of the UKs most popular tourist destinations.

Maybe a YHA building would suit you. They have them all over the UK and are very cheap, some are very basic but others are more upmarket.

Some are shared accomodation (many beds in the same room) but in others you can get a private room.

If you want somewhere quieter (and less expensive) than the lake district maybe the Forest of Bowland which is an "AONB" (and near Manchester)

You should also consider going West into North Wales which has Mount Snowdon, the Snowdon National Park and many areas of forest.

The Llyn Peninsula is also in North Wales, west of Snowdon, and is also very quiet. A loveyl place.

North Wales is likely to be cheaper than the Lake District.

To be honest the whole of the south coast of the UK is suitable and there are many beautiful areas, from Ramsgate in the very East to Cornwall on the very West.

Many people would say Devon and Cornwall are the best, but they are full of people in the summer so can become over crowded (and the camp sites may be fully booked already)
