Attention Seeking

Hi

My nearly 4 year old son, is terrible if anyone else is around, He conestly wants my attention so will start running around and jumping all over the funriture and starts to shout. My friends that come round are understanding although they have stopped coming as much. How do i try to stop it, ive tried the time out, star charts, everything (or what seems everything).

Im guessin you've tried completely ignoring the behaviour? I guess that would be the best way although try to pay him some attention when your friends are round when he is quiet otherwise he will start resenting you hjaving friends.

Yeah i have tried to ignore it, when it gets bad he has the naughty step to sit on, but when friedns come round they are good with him and talk to him and play with him. I know he does it to push my limits and i do involve him, but he needs to learn that he has to share too.

i agree with you that he needs to learn that he can't always have your attention.

does he have something to do while you are talking with friends? eg drawing or watching a video?

try to catch him being good and not attention-seeking and praise him eg 'well done you are playing very nicely on your own'.

and make the time that he is on his own small to start with so tell him 'mummy is talking with samantha. you need to play quietly on your own now. when you have finished your drawing come and show me...' so he knows he is not being ignored. then give him lots of praise for doing what you said and making a lovely drawing - and send him off on his own again!!
