bottles in the dishwasher

do you have to have a sterilizer for babies bottles, or can you put them in the dishwasher instead?

Not too sure but i think with that sort of heat the teets(that's if you plan to put them in) may melt and that would only clean them i don't know if it would get rid of germs. Sterilizing is of course safer, you can even put the babys dummy, feeding spoon etc in. Get one by 'Avent'.

I wouldnt recommend the dishwasher instead of a steriliser as you need boiling water to sterilise the bottles properly. Any traces of milk left in the bottles/teats can make babies ill, especially newborns. I bought an Avent steriliser for the microwave and it was great, just wash bottles as normal, then put them in the steriliser with some water in the bottom of it and put it in the microwave for about 5 mins.

Or get an electric steamer - takes twelve minutes though.  And it takes up space on your work top.

I'm sure all my mother did was wash them? and the only disease i had as a child was petulance.

We wash then sterilize all our bottles, dummies and syringes (great for administering gripe water!).

the dishwasher wouldnt get to the right tempreture to sterilise effectivley, you can wash them in there (i would recommend a dishwasher bottle rack from mothercare though!) and then bung them in an electric steamer, i loved mine!

the avent microwave steriliser is one of the best baby items I bought, as it fits bowls (once weaning), breast expressing machine, and of course bottles/teats etc in it.

I bought fantastic bottles that can be sterilised in the microwave individually.  No need for extra equipment, just the bottle and some water.  I got them from Mothercare.

Don't take ANY chances with your babys health. Don't risk putting them in the dishwasher only, please use a sterilizer. It doesn't have to be expensive, I bought one of the basic sterilizers that you just add water and milton to and leave for 30 minutes. It also held bowls, spoons, dummies etc.

I put all my baby's stuff in the dish washer, though I did have a sterilzer when she was very tiny, but that was because she was in the SCUBU for 8 weeks (she was 8 weeks preterm) and all her stuff was at the SCUBU and she had her own unit there.

When she came home I kept the unit, but hardly ever used it.  The stuff came out perfectly from my dishwasher.  I have a dishwasher that runs a cycle at 110 degrees, hotter than a steam one.  I did rinse them with boiled water though before I used them as I got a bit of a bee in my bonnet about the salt.

Having said that, she was the only one I sterilzed for and only because of her specific health issues.  All my other children were exclusively breast fed and I didn't bother sterilizing my nipples!  By the time they had other equipment, I just dishwashed and have never sterilzed bowls, spoons etc etc.  By the time they need them, they are usually sitting on the floor chewing toys (5 months!):  What's the point of letting them do that and then sterilizing a spoon????

I'd say Dishwasher is fine once babe is a bit older and robust.  Sterilize for a weak, or tiny baby.  If for nothing else, but your own peace of mind.
