my 13 month old will not drink milk. i have tried warming the milk, skim, whole, and even chocolate, and she will have nothing to do with it. concerned about the nutrients she's missing, i tried to go back to formula, and she won't take that now either. all she is drinking is juice and water for the last week. any advice, and how concerned should i be about this?

Hi mattoxamy

Have just read the book my health visitor gave me. To quote what it says

"you should aim to give your child 350ml (12oz) of milk a day but If your baby doesn't like milk give at least 2 servings of full fat yoghurt and cheese or milk-based dishes (eg cheese sauce, rice pudding etc) a day. this will provide calcium for healthy bones."

I think perhaps if it was me i would speak to my health visitor, she will put your mind at ease and offer you some good advice. or you could leave it for a few days then try her again with the milk. she may just take to it again then.

Hope this helps x

My boy has never touched milk - I've always given him chees and yoghurt and that compensates.
agree as long as he's getting dairy products, use milk in cheese sauces and milk puddings see if he takes it like that.

My eldest son, 9yrs now ,hated milk. Even as a breastfed baby, he hardly drank any - as a bottled fed baby, he would have it only when he was physically starving ....sometimes he would go for 7 hours without a drop and he was only 2 months old!! As soon as he was solid fed, he refused milk totally! I made sure he had plenty of yogurt, cheese and any foodstuffs with the magic word 'calcium' written on the packaging.

As a 9 yr old, he will have milk on his cereal but leave the excess in the bottom of the bowl. As for having a glass of milk, no way! Baby no.2, who is now 2 yrs, liked his bottles but when he became solid fed - he stopped milk, except for his bedtime bottle!!

Hope my story helps!

my youngest went off milk when she was 8 months old when i swapped from bottle to cup so i put milk in cereals and mash.she was quite happy to drink juice from then on with the added bonus of getting milk from elsewhere.
Exactly as above, my 5 year old wouldn't have follow on milk or milk (loves milk chocolate though!!) She's not keen on cheese unless in a cooked dish. She likes yoghurt and enjoys the yoghurt drinks, I was concerned about her not getting enough calcium, but there calcium in other foods, and there is a bottled water by Danone with added calcium, that you could make her juice with, I did it for a while, but then realised I was worrying unnecessarily. I am a big believer (only through my experiences) in Diary products, especially milk, contributing to a host of symptoms when people are even mildly intolerant. My 1st had colic (erradicated by a cows milk & beef protein free diet whilst breastfeeding) My 2nd got mild excema patches on backs of knees when milk was introduced, he liked milk, but wet the bed for longer than the average child. My 3rd has avoided it. Some people believe that the body has a natural aversion to something that is not going to suit you. Even though I think some symptoms have been linked to diary products, I have never considered them severe enough to eradicate diary totally, as this would seem a worse consequence than the symptoms. But with flare ups of excema I have limited intake, with success. I met a Pediatrician once who strongly believed that the guts of young humans were nowhere near developed wnough to cope with Cows milk. Sorry to go on! Good Luck
Hi I also agree with what the last person has written. A doctor also tlod myself that cow milk was meant for baby cows and not children!!!!!! As my child suffered from cronic constipation . I would not worry as long as you offer diary suppliments that fine. My daughter hates cows milk she says it makes her feel sick, but she does drink goats milk.................. and organic milk is brillllll as it is pure and is not pumped with hormones. Hope this helps you

have you tried just adding to cereals, eg ready brek, porrige

My daughter is severely allergic to all dairy products and not has not had any since she was about 4 months old. She drinks Rice milk (available tesco, sainsburies, somerfield etc) and it has added calcium. She is absolutely fit as a fiddle.

Another good calcium source is tinned sardines (with the bones left in) tinned macaral too and pilchards

Also very green leafy veg, broccoli, cabbage etc. the dairy free yoghurts have it in too, and so does margerine and butter etc.
