Leaking Milk Bottles

Does anyone have a similar problem with supermarket milk bottles. We found that several 2 lt. bottles of milk from tesco leaked when stood upright in the fridge, some times with no problem for a couple of days use then they leak. We have now found a similar problem with Iceland bottles.
Have you found similar and if so have you found a way to avoid it ?

i had a similar problem with a can of carlsberg, it's left me traumatised

Do you mean actual glass bottles or cartons ?

Are you freezing the milk?

This may slightly split the plastic.

Unsure how milk can leek in the fridge and not on the shelf if there is a defect.

The last bottle to leak, this morning, was about half used with no problem but was found leaking after breakfast. Milk is not being frozen. The containers are 2 lt. plastic bottles. I think the problem may lie in the quality of the bottle being made thinner and that in use the movement of the plastic as milk is poured flexes a spot till it leaks. I ask the question because I am curious to know if I am very unlucky or whether this is a common thing. Tesco were informed and gave me a refund but I would prefer no leaks.

Donny, I buy Tesco milk, semi skimmed, 2 pints. I have not had this problem.

As I say, Spath , I might be unlucky.
Since the leaks are usually near the bottom then the leak if unnoticed would be as much as is left in the bottle.

Maybe you are being a bit heavy handed with the milk when putting it back?

Why don't you buy your milk in glass bottles. Don't leak and much less plastic waste.

Supermarkets don't sell milk in glass bottles.

We have those bottles but have never had one leak ! Nor has anyone I know ! Are you squeezing them too tight together ?

I don't think even milk delivery men have glass bottles now ! All plastic !

Sorry, but here in Dundee the dairies have started delivering milk in glass bottles once more. They are doing a roaring trade and having difficulty keeping up with demand. Unfortunately not in supermarkets yet.

Perhaps there is a sharp edge in the fridge door tray, or they are being squeezed in.

I very much doubt you will ever see milk in glass bottles from a supermarket. Glass bottles are very heavy, hence, you would need even larger lorries to carry the extra weight, and that would increase the fuel used, so that would mean a price hike on the milk. A 2 pint glass bottle would be crazy also.

Donny, I've had the same problem, i think once you use some of the milk then the bottle is more flimsy and bends so it weakens, thats my theory anyway, but i know exactly what you mean

It seems not to be a terribly common problem. I mistakenly said 2lt. bottles when they were actually 4lt., we are now going to try the 2 lt size. hopefully less flexing.
