Although it doesn't seem an entirely appropriate topic heading (I may just be over-sensitive and it's entirely appropriate!) I didn't know where else to place this question, so here goes...

Does anyone know if it would be possible (around 1978 if that's relevant) whether a woman could give birth, have the child adopted and NOT know what sex the child was?

Say, for example, it wasn't mentioned in the delivery room, or afterwards, would it be clearly obvious/visible on any papers she would have to sign?

My wife adopted her eldest in 1978 (and the youngest in 1981). She reckons (but does not know for certain) that it would be impossible for the mother not to know.

First of all both kids had names that were given by the birth mother. Presumably the birth was registered aswell.

When my wife had her children, she was told not to get too attached to them (yeah right) as the birth mother could come and take them away (within a certain timescale).

Also, both birth mothers had the government maternity grants - so again presumably they would have to have registered the birth for them to claim this as well.
