Poorly baby

My Daughter is just under 1 and has been ill for what seems like forever! It's been about 2/3 weeks now that she has had a runny nose but today her temperature has reached 38.6c and she keeps crying which is unlike her as you rarely hear a peep, she won't crawl or stand up again totally out of character and hasn't had any milk since 8am this morning (it's now 5pm) and won't eat. What can I do? I have phoned NHS direct but they say it's going to take a couple of hours to ring back and I'm so worried about her. Any ideas please let me know- thank you. xxxx

Hi Kh, keep your daughter cool. Try giving her some water or fluids. Ring the NHS line again. Tell them your concerns. do you have a NHS Walk in centre nearby?

I keep dabbing her down with a damp cold flannel - will this do? She refuses any sort of drink whether it's milk, water or oral re hydration fluid. I have tried giving it to her out a cup, bottle, syringe and even tried tricking her into thinking I was drinking it out my glass (she normally wants what ever I have) and nothing works as she just cries, gags or spits it out. It's now been 11 hourssince she has eaten or drank anything. Any more ideas? xxx

I am no doctor Kh, but just trying to give advice, as I am a mum too. So I would keep dabbing her with the flannel. Have you rang NHS again. If you are worried, then ring them again. Be polite, but demanding. Tell them she has had not fluids all day. Tell them how worried you are.

My baby had somethimg similar a couple of weeks ago, and I've got to be honest I didn't hesitate, I took her straight to A&E. Four worrying hours of tests etc later we found out she had a throat infection.

I would suggest taking your's to A&E if your still worried, far better to be safe than sorry. Though it will probably turn out to be something and nothing the same as mine.

I phoned NHS Direct back and I have gotten hold of my Doctors out of hours number and have an appointment to see him at 8:10pm this evening. I will let you know when I get back how it went. Thank you both for the advice and reassurance. xxx

Just got back from the Hospital. Doctor doesn't know whats wrong and has given us some paracetamol to put "where the sun doesn't shine!!!!" as she is rejecting it orally now. I hope this is going to work but if not he has said to go back tomorrow in any case for further checks. It's now been 14hrs since any fluids but lets hope she will be good and ready for a big breakfast tomorrow morning!!!! I just want to thank you both for your great advice once again. Night night. xxxx

What happened? How is she now?

Must of been a bad baby day yesterday as i spent 6 hours in A&E yesterday with my 2 year old for pretty much the same thing (lots of fever and vomitting and not taking in any fluid).

It can be heart breaking.

Today has been pretty rough - lots of crying and not alot of sleeping but at least she is eating and drinking now. I'm just hoping she sleeps through the night as I'm exhausted as I only had about 3 hours good sleep last night. Hows your baby - what was wrong with him/her? It's really awful - you feel useless and out of control. You just want to let them know it's going to be alright. Well, thats how I feel anyway!!!! xxx

She is getting much better - thank you! She had tonsilites so is on antibiotics and they seem to be doing the trick!!! I really can't thank you enough - the night she went down hill, I was so stressed and upset. You really helped keep my cool. I would normally ask my Parents for advice but they are on holiday and I can't get hold of them. Your an ANGEL!!!!! xxxxx
