A couple of years ago my son (then aged 9) and myself went on a flight from Bristol to Edinburgh and unbeknown to me he had an ear infection. The pressure in the plane caused him to end up with a perforated ear-drum and to say it is was painful is an understatement!
My poor husband ended up having to drive from Plymouth to Edinburgh and then back again with us as he was unable to fly.
If everything is ok you could try using the equalising ear plugs that you can get in Boots that equalise the cabin pressure in their ears, and of course as said above sucking helps a lot!
Hope all goes well
