my 12 yr old son has awful handwriting so bad that you can barely read it at times. does anyone have any tips on how i can help him improve it, apart from constant practice.

There is a good package in whsmiths called "Handwriting rescue pack" and I know lots of children for whom it has made a difference.

Oh I am 29 and my hand writing looks like a four year olds :-(
