Hi all. I have my 20 week scan tomorrow, i'm actually 23 weeks now but that's the earliest appointment they could give me.
I was just wondering what i could do to ensure that the baby is clearer on the monitor? (If you know what i mean). Ie; that i can clearly see the baby and genitals etc.. I have read that drinking lots of water before hand will help as it raises the uterus or something so that the baby is at the front of me rather than being towards the back.. I remember this happened when i had the scan when i was carrying my son.
Also, for various reasons i'm hoping it's a girl and i just wondered how to cope if i find out it's a boy and i feel dissapointed?... I really don't want to feel this way.

Thanks x

Awww congrats!!!

I was told it was unnecessary to drink lots of fluids before my 20 week scan as it's not as tiny as it is on your 12th week one, but obviously it can't do any harm!

I genuinely don't think you'll be disappointed if it is a boy, you'll be that relieved that everything's fine that it won't enter your head.

However fingers crossed that it's the girl you're wanting :-)
when i went for mine i went to the toilet before and they said they couldnt see clearly coz my bladder was empty so they sent me away 4 half an hour for a drink and to walk about but it dont half hurt when u need a wee when havin a scan let us no asap
good luck x
Stressed out my daughter has four children and said to drink loads of coke and chocolate before you go for the scan. that will make it move around a lot.hopefully they will be able to see what it is girl or boy? My eldset daughter is expecting her third baby in early feb. so must be around the same time as you. she had her scan the other day and they have been told it is a girl. she already has a boy and girl. She did say before she would like another boy but when told a girl she said she was a little dissapointed and then was pleased. Now she says she is going to get everything ready for when "she" arrives.Hope it go's ok for you. fingers crossed Brendax

Thanks to the answers. Brenda, my due date is 20th Jan and this baby moves sooo much! lol. I can't tell from the shape of my bump as it looks similar to my previous pregnancy but i've heard that it was an old wives tale to tell gender through bump shape.

I'm anxious about tomorrow, mainly because i have been waiting for it for ages and now i will find out.
Will keep you all posted. x
Drinking a lot will help to make the scan clearer, although I agree that it doesn't need to be as much as for the 12 week scan as the baby is higher. Don't forget as well, that the scanners aren't always running to time and the more you've got in your bladder, undoubtedly the longer you'll have to wait!!!
If you are particularly keen to have a girl, then I think it is a really good idea to find out what it's going to be at the scan if at all possible so that you can prepare yourself if it is a boy. I am sure that, after any initial disappointment, even if it is a boy, you will come to terms with it fairly quickly - a healthy baby (fingers crossed) is always a blessing. Good luck.

Hi all. Just wanted to let you know that i had the scan, luckily on an empty bladder and everything was ok... and... It's another boy!
I am a little dissapointed but i feel guilty towards my unborn baby for feeling this way.

Thanks to you all for your views and answers. x
congratulations! so glad everything went ok. Boys are a lottttttttttttttttttt easier than girls.! you will be glad to hear. ha ha. By now you will have started to get used to the baby being a boy.As long as he is ok and healthy that is all that matters. look after yourself. Brenda XX
