Fetus Size - Blood Sugar ????????

Yesterday my girlfriend and I were at the hospital for a check up scan. We're 29 Weeks pregnant at the moment. The Consultant who we saw said that the baby was above average and that the size of the baby had to be monitored. Also she said that my girlfriend's Blood Sugar was borderline. I know that in some cases women can develope diabetes while pregnant. Is the HighBlood Sugar and Large baby size relate. The Doctor did nothing to ease our concerns. Any help would be great.

I think it must do My sisters first baby was 6lb 8ozs. With the second after she developed sugar he was 11lb.

Yes it is related. In my case, a scan revealed a large baby & I was then tested for sugar in my blood & urine. I was also 'borderline'.

I have also heard of cases where this was discovered initially after a blood/urine test. A large baby doesn't always mean that you have gestational diabetes, but if there is sugar present in tests then you will be closely monitored.

Big babies are often associated with diabetes however, I had to go back for a scan at 30 weeks because my baby was measuring big for dates but it had nothing to do with blood sugar levels, just a big baby although not as big as they made out. (9lbs) but they have to be on the safe side. If she does develop diabetes then at least they are onto it and will monitor her throughtout the remainder of her pregnancy. Dont panic though, they told a friend of mine her baby was too small for dates and when she was born she weighed a very healthy 7.6 ounces.

Yes, they are related. I developed Gestational Diabetes with my 1st child, but wasn't diagnosed with it until I was about 32 weeks. However, your wife needs to know that if she does develop Gestational Diabetes, that her chances of developing Full Blown Diabetes later in life are greater. I get tested every year for Diabetes and fortunately, it's been 14 years since my first child and I have not developed it, nor has he.
