maybe forget the tea and have a beer
Anti depressents can take up to 14 days to get into your system & start working properly. If you can try persevere with them hopefully you'll notice a positive difference by then. If however theyre making you feel like you can't function properly & leaving things turned on which might be dangerous, i'd go back to docs & see if they can give you a different one. When i started taking them 4months ago i found if i took them at night i couldn't sleep, what time of day do you take them? Im a massive advocator of counselling aswell, that might be worth a go & more productive in the long run? I found that the right balance of the two to be a lifesaver! Good luck xx

i am taking them at night i think i will take them in the morning
Hi Carliex.
Give them a little time to get working. I know many people that take anti dep medication and they all started out like you with the shakey feeling. My friends mainly started to demonstrate high anxiety and then all calmed down. They will bring perspective back and will help you to get the right mix of chemicals flowing in your body. All you can do is double check the dosage and make sure you are taking the right amounts. The doctor will be reluctant to change at an early stage. Avoid alcohol because it will depress you afterwards. You will feel less wired in a couple of days, what you are experiencing appears to be normal. My friend takes Fluoxetine or Prozac as it is more commonly known and they are amazing. They turned him around in very little time and I am sure yours will too.
hi carliex, first of all can i say well done for getting help. After the birth of my son 8 years ago i suffered with postnatal depression and like you my partner wasnt supportive, i really felt alone, low and emotional all the time. My doctor prescribed me fluoxitine and like i also suffered with my concentration and anxiety, but after a week or so i did start to settle. You need to give it a bitr of time to settle in, however if you still dont feel any better after a couple of weeks then perhaps you need a different medication. Can i also suggest that in order to beat ther depression have you thought of joinging a playgroup in your area? like you there are many other mothers feeling the way you are and both you and your daughter can make friends. Ypu need a bit oof confidenced building too by the sounds of your previous posts and by doing this or getting a hobby etc, you will get this.
I made the mistake of locking myself away when i had my son and we both suffered for that. However when i had my daughter a year ago i promised myself i wouldnt do that and went along to the local playgroup. Of course i was nervous going in as i didnt know anyone but both me and my daughter now have a lovely group of friends down there now, and ive noticed that my daughter has developed quicker than what my son did. she started walking at 10 months and at 15 months she is saying quite alot of words for her age.
Well done for going to see the GP carliex. It must have been really hard for you.
Which antidepressants did they put you on as different types of ADs give different side effects.
Hi carliex. i started anti d's last saturday (citalopram 20 mg) and felt most peculiar for the first five days - a bit shaky, uncontrollable yawning/clenching of teeth, feeling sick and basically just not feeling like me. In the last few days it's got a lot better. I haven't cried for a few days so hopefully feeling a bit better. Still not 100% sure i am doing the right thing tho!
Almost all ant-depressants produce various physical side-effects in the first two - three weeks of starting a prescription - hardly ideal when you feel really bad anyway!

Persevere, and remember, these a 'physical' effects, and will subside when your system settles down.

If not, see your GP for a dosage adjustment, or even a change of medication - modern AD's are hugely sophisticated, and what suits one patient may not suit another.

Hang on in there, the worst part is over - you are on the wy to a balanced life with the help of some meds. Think of it as 'mental insulin' - you need it to balance your system.

Good luck.
