My Boyfriend and I are thinking about starting a family, I was wondering when the best time is to try and also do you have to wait untill you miss a period to find out if you are or when can you take a test?

Your most fertile tilme is 14 days before your next period, so if you ahve a 28 day cycle it will be slap bang in the middle of that.

You need to wait until your period is late before actually testing as the pregnacy hormones need time to build up before they will show as positive on a test.

You could always buy an ovulation kit which will pin point the best two days of your cycle to conceive. Not everyone has a 'text book' cycle, but the ovulation kit will tell you when it's best the test in respect if you latest cycle.

If you are using chemical methods of contraception, e.g. the pill or depo provera, then you should wait at least 6 months after stopping these before trying for a baby and use alternative barrier methods in the meantime. This is to allow the synthetic hormones to clear your system and let your cycle get back to normal.

Early... In what sense? My cycle is 21 days (short!!) so i start using the ovulation kit on the 5th day of my cycle and found that i ovulate between day 8-11 of my cycle. My husband and i have been trying for a few months, i have been off the Depo-Provera for 18 months after being on it for 10 years. So i'm not expecting instant success, happy to continue trying!!!!

only slightly offended by the above 2 answers.  My partner and I had been together 13 years when we decided to get pregnant.  We've never married (gasp!) but you know what - we've seen lots of our peers meet, marry and divorce in the 15 years we've been together.  Marriage for me is an outdated, meaningless ceremony (be it civil or religious) and I just don't see the point in it at all. I'd watch out you two (chillum and bradleyy), that moral high ground is a very shaky place to stand.   Bottom, only you two know if you're ready for a baby or not. Good luck and enjoy the practise - even if it takes a wee while.  xxx

You should start taking folic acid for a couple of months before trying to get pregnant. But have a good time trying.
