I've used this product for a number of years now. You do have to pay for it, but the basic kit is quite reasonable. The best thing is its ease of use. The data entries are intuitive and it builds its own data base. At any rate... good hunting...
www.genesreunited.co.uk might be a good place to start. It lets you build your tree up online and hook into other people's trees if you find long lost rellies (though, if you're a Jones, this proves very difficult!).
If you only require the mechanism rather than the information you can use Excel. Bring up the toolbar for the drawing options and you can create dialogue boxes and various types of connecting lines. I've used it myself and the results are pretty good. If you concentrate on one particular side of the family you can change the colour of the borders around the dialogue box when following a different thread ( Maternal / Paternal)
