Two Year Old Not Talking
My little granddaughter, (the apple of my eye) is two and is not talking yet. Her hearing is perfect, she understands everything, can point to numbers up to 12, can point to all the colours correctly and is bright as a button. When asked this afternoon, "where's the moon", she pointed straightaway.
When asked "what is that" she says "da" but does say Bye Bye, Daddy and Mummy.
She is booked to see a Speech Therapist in Feb but I don't see that they can do that we aren't doing already. Any advice would be great.

Do you think, possibly, that the family are doing too much for her, so she doesn't need to try to talk? OH hardly said a word when he was tiny - he was the youngest of 4 children under 4, and whenever he wanted something, he just pointed and the older kids got it for him. Perhaps if she had to ask for things before they happen, she would start to give voice to what she's thinking. She sounds a bright little girl!
you will be surprised what a speech therapist can do!
try not to worry about your grand daughters speech, all children develop skills at different times. speech therapy is not just the encouragement of speech, they play special games aimed at assessing her abilities in order to find the right approach.
once they work out the right approach the regular speech therapy sessions will definitely make a difference and bring her speech along. best of luck x

I don't think there's anything to worry about really.. my daughter had her own funny little language that only I could understand.. but when she started playgroup and mixed with others she made herself known!! The visit to the speech therapist was so interesting as they write phonetically and point out where the issues are... good luck (not that you need it.. she sounds like a bright little spark!!)
I had something similar with my daughter. She was very bright and understood everything but hardly spoke - I found some old video footage of her the other day (she's 7 now) going off to a friend's 3rd birthday party and her responses to the questions I'm asking are a couple of words at the most. I think at 2 she probably said about 10 words. Then suddenly something just changed and she started speaking almost fluently. She's now top of the class at reading and chatters non-stop. Her brother started speaking at one and by 18 months spoke in sentences. The difference can be amazing.
Hi - one of my two yar old twins is not talking either (he is three in March). He has had an initial appointment with the speech therapist and they confirm that he can hear (he also has hearing tests but goes all shy so they haven't managed to do a full one yet), that he understands what is going on, etc. No one is concerned that he is stupid - just that he can't talk. He makes noises and 'sings' too. He doesn't have another appointment until February as they say he is too young to understand what he will be asked to do. All he can say is Flower (which his what he calls his sister) and communicates using sign language (learnt from Mr Tumble). I am very concerned about it but I expect that it will sort itself out.

Then there is character....my first born was always slow, walking at 15 months but within three days was running. Peeing and Pooping - again very late but when we did, no accidents. And speech which was close to two years but again well developed.
And that is her - a perfectionist; won't take the risk until she knows that she can do it. She has improvedas to this.... You may have a perfectionist on your hands therefore
