Morning guys. Son has had hacking cough for 2 weeks now. Have tried over counter cough medicines and lozenges which haven't helped at all. Saw doctor last Thursday who couldn't find anything else ie infection but prescribed Amoxycillin anyway to see if that would help -it hasn't. Any other suggestions to try and help? It's driving him mad.

No......nothing magical....cough medicines are a waste of time and money....the cough will go in good time without any outside help.

It won't harm him in any way.

Thanks Sqad - will just tell him to just plod on x
My niece, a GP, recommended pholcodein linctus. If you buy Boots own it costs less than £2 a bottle and believe me, it actually does work, it's the codein in it which is a cough suppressant. It's the only cough medicine I've ever bought as I believe the rest of its a waste of money and totally ineffective.
How long have the antibiotics been prescribed for, is it not ususally a week's supply,if no difference go back to doctor?
Aren't colds and coughs caused by viruses? Antibiotics wouldn't help.
The doc prescribed amoxcillin sandyroe so I am just trying to be helpful, sorry!
Does he like honey? If so 2 teaspoons sipped very slowly and allowed to trickle down throat does the trick for me. Also Ricola lozenges (Swiss herbal, in lots of flavours from Holland & Barrett and sometimes in SuperDrug or supermarkets) are just amazing, they really stop a cough especially if its a tickly choking one.
