School Proms.
19 Answers
This new american thing about having a Prom for school leavers (16 year Olds) is ridiculous. My daughter has just spent upward of £400 on a dress, shoes, hair do, stetch limo and numerous other bits and pieces, all I can say is, thank goodness this ritual was not about when my kids were leaving school. Has anyone else been nearly bankrupt with daughters/sons being decked out for their school Prom.

Daft thing is which I find really funny, my grand daughter goes to an all girls school, the boys school next door are just having a 'sportsman dinner' type of thing. So all this expense and dressing up to the nines is just for class mates (girls only). They can take a partner if they have one, but most of the girls haven't got a lad in tow.
The tech at the end of my road has their prom next Thursday. The day of the teachers strike.
I wonder how that goes?
Not only have they the cost of dresses etc there is also the obligatory flash caror transport!!!
I think it is a load of baloney. If we had a leavers disco in the afternoon we classed ourselves lucky.

I didn't even go to my prom night for numerous reasons. First of all, at the time, I had a weight problem. Secondly, I didn't have the money to spend. Thirdly, I didn't have a date and finally I didn't see the hoo-ha, living in the UK, anyway. My brother went on his prom night but I didn't see any point, why hook up with someone, dance with them for one night and then never speak to one another again? I spent £600 on my 18th birthday on a dress, stretch limousine etc. I lost weight and made an effort for the night, the guy I danced with on my night was an old colleague and will be my husband in two years time!
It's very unfair on those parents who simply cannot afford it. What's wrong with a school disco? Everyone wants to go 'over the top' with everything these days. It's like everything is a competition about showing off how much money you can spend. It's all so very shallow and sets a very bad example.
I agree with Dave50. I used to be on this website (I forget its name) and there were two types of currencies there- (to buy clothes and accesorsies or whatever) one you start with, the other you need to buy. Well, I see this girl yelling at another saying things like, "I bet your homeless, *beep*" and stuff like that, just because she wasn't wearing anything that "cost" currency No.2. I went over to stand up for her, and I told her cyberbullies are cowards. Then she "slapped" me (quotes because she said "*slaps her*) and started saying that I was poor and ugly. And get this- I'M the one who got banned! Honestly, I just don't get our society anymore...

My mother always hated Trick or Treat on Halloween as it was an American invention. The irony was that she died on Halloween and the two burly policemen at the door stopped the children from visiting, so she had the last laugh!
I didn't know we now had proms. What an expensive waste. I'd rather spend the money on a good holiday with all my school friends.
