Labelling school uniform

Usually I just write our surname on the labels of the uniform but can anyone recommend a good laundry pen or have any other suggestions? Boy #1's polo shirts are sooooo expensive I am consisting getting them micro-chipped. Thanks

Staple them to his body is probably the safest!!

I buy sew in labels for my grandsons uniform, they only take minutes to sew in, and stay there sher!..........avoids losing expensive clothing!........I get them from E bay, not expensive!.........better than the iron on ones, or pens.....

Hi welsh- didn't see you there. Not bloody sewing labels in - not only am I rubbish at sewing I don't have the patience to do 3 x 5 complete uniforms and PE kits! Mind you, with the price of boy #1's uniform I might have to learn a bit of patience!

A small nibbed permanent marker, what I use anyeway as I'm far too lazy to sew in labels. They occasionaly do wash off, but even I can muster the energy to rewrite them again- just about.

Like your thinking Boo - shall add such a pen to my shopping list (still have uniform to get). Usually do it in biro as the laundry pens are rubbish and the labels are so small but with the cost of secondary uniform I have decided to increase security measures this year.

sher, doesn't take long to sew them in, just buy some strong thread and put about three stitches in each side of the label, it takes seconds, doesn't need to be neat!...........they'll last all year!.......I know you have lots to do, but believe me, it does only take seconds for each one!.............

Seriously I generally use a pemanent marker like B00, however I have found a biro to stay on as long as most other pens.

the iron on tabs are rubbish. I find that because my boys are big for their age, their uniform gets targeted more as the school year wears on and kids are looking for the bigger size in sweatshirts etc. Maybe I'm just too cynical.....

sher, why not order some now, use a marker for now, and then sew then in bit by bit, won't seem such a task then!..............

I always used sew in ones for mine and saved money by ordering them with two names at front (ie Mary Sue ******) and then folding the names under, if I have explained that clearly. Also for expensive kit like blazers would stitch it in to an unobtrusive place, so if someone acquired a Blazer, we knew where to look. Such as in the sleeve lining or inside a pocket.

In the dim and distant past every item of my uniform was labelled with Cash's name tapes.

I have ordered 144 sew in labels with just our surname (Sherrard - shouldn't be too many of those about) not going for an initial as I think we should be ok with just the surname. Surprised by how cheap they were. Just got to get some cotton to sew them in now.

good on you sher, get some button thread, it's strong and thick, you'll only need to sew about three stitches in each side of the label, and they'll stay there for ages!............

sher, I sew them over the makers label, they are quickly noticed there!.....but really wherever you think they will be noticed really!.

i'd put them somewhere that your son can see them, but not anywhere that other parents can criticise your sewing :o) - remember that anyone stealing it can remove the sewn in label if they can see it, but if you mark it somewhere unobtrusive, you should be able to prove it's yours.
