Is 7 too young to go to a concert?
39 Answers
My daughter is desperate to go see Katy Perry but it starts at 7.30pm on school night and I have no idea when it finishes. We would have to get seats as under 14's are not allowed to stand. As I have left it so late they are extortionately priced so hoping to get them cheap last min unless definitely wont be going. My OH says shes too young but I'm not really sure that it will do her that much harm to have 1 late night as a one off. What do others think?

I would say you have to be x age to go to a concert and leave it at that. I wouldn't take my seven year old to a concert - I don't think it is not the place for children, use the saved money for a family day out instead.
Concerts are loud very loud, people pushing and shoving to get into the arena's. By the time you manage to get out of the arena car park (After the concert) it could be well past midnight, as in my case, been to 4 concerts this year, total nightmare to get out of the car parks. in my opinion i think 7 is far to young. You tube some of her previous concerts and then you can decide for yourself if she is appropiate for a 7 year old.
This child will be overexcited and overtired at the end of the concert. So next day the child comes to school overtired and slightly deafened from the din. She won't have done her reading or other homework. She'll be lacking the energy to play and join in games.
The child is 7, and should be getting ready for bed at 7.30.
I haven't the faintest idea who the performer is but others refer to her being 'sexy' - you say the child won't notice.....what the child notices is that you are exposing her to this and approving of it.

Definately not too young. My youngest daughter has been going to gigs since she first moved to Germany and she was 4 then as her step father is in a band, it's not done her any harm and she's wheelchair bound. She's doing well at school and everything is as it should be. Let her go and enjoy herself, one nighyt won't hurt her.
Can't comment on whether the content of a Katy Perry concert is appropriate for a 7 year old as I don't listen to her music but from my own experience I don't think the odd late night will do her any harm, esp if you are seated and away from any of the 'raucous' behaviour some ABers seem to be worried about.
Please take ear plugs for her so that she can enjoy the music without it feeling TOO loud. Also explain to her that it means a VERY late night and that she will still have to get up for school the next day - TIRED OR NOT!
OH and I were taking our two to (mostly metal) gigs by the age of 7 and they have turned out just fine. In fact one has her BA Hons in Journalism with lots of music reviews under her belt and the other has just entered her 2nd year of a degree in Sound Production/Engineering.
Handled responsibly, concert going can be a fantastic and unforgettable experience.
Good luck with however you decide to play this.

Wow I can't believe seriously how uptight everyone is about a concert. They are nice experiences and fun, is the child to have no fun at all growing up? No wonder kids of 13 and 14 rebel and behave like idiots when they aren't introduced to things like this sooner in the company of their parents. What exactly do you all think will happen to the child that will make the sky fall- she won't see anything ' sexualised', her education won't plumet over one night and she won't becomes a drink and drug abuser because she's been to a rock/ pop concert with her mum- she's seven she just wants to go and see her idol live, whatever is so wrong or scary about that?

To answer your original question " Is 7 too young to go to a concert"? I would say no.
However, a Katy Perry concert? Yes! Far too young. Not suitable at all.
I don't think the odd late night is bad for a child, but I think a 7 year old would be more suited to something not so.. er... raunchy. I would never allow my young child to be 'into' her, as I just don't think it's appropriate for that age group.
