i want to buy my nephew a gift, something he can keep but stumped for ideas

i;ve been thinking about baby books, cuddly toy, money boxes but i really have no idea

do you still have things you were bought as a child and what were they, or what have you bought for a child that has lasted? i have humphrey the dog and a pewter plate that did have dumbo on it but thats all but faded now considereing the amount of times i've moved i'm amazed i still have them

I am contemplating one of those whisky thingies as well, but my bro might not be too impressed

I always buy new babys a set of coins from the year they were born - various sets available on Royal Mint website. I have actually ordered one earlier today for my little grandson born a few weeks ago. These they can keep for ever and i dont even think about WHAT to get anymore but just order one of these.

Oh and of course make sure i buy a national and local newspaper on the day of birth for them to keep too!

A bottle of a limited release whisky, such as Ardbeg or Laphroaig should appreciate in value - have a look on eBay! And he could always drink it on his 16th...

When my daughter was born, I went round Manchester shooting several rolls of photos of the streets, shops, people, cars and whatever. I developed them (you could do it at home in the Black & White days) and sealed them in a film tin until her 18th. It went down very well, and she could have easily sold them, but still has them.

Know the feeling with my nephew (he does exist honest haha, noone is allowed to put photos of him on Facebook though). Knitted things seem to have gone down really well due to the personal effort.

I still have my teddybear from when I was little, he was handmade for me before I was born and is falling to pieces but would never get rid of him. I also have ones friends got me for birthdays, maybe it's more of a girly thing.

Maybe some kind of memory book but a before birth one, photos of family and the main things in your lives at the time of his birth, something that will be quite nostalgic once he's older to see how everyone and everything looked at the time. Maybe put something from the newspaper from the day he is born in it and a CD single with the number one on the day he is born etc... something about the most popular TV shows etc...

You could even get people to write notes of their memories at the time he was born or make a video diary with family and friends talking about him being born - something more personal than recounting stories afterwards.

When my kids were born my brother bought all the papers for that day and the no 1 single for that week. It fascinates my kids looking at it.

I shall be watching this with interest - I am going to become an auntie in February (not a real auntie, an adopted one).

I bought my little god daughter a steiff lamb (daddy is a small farmer). So it is something cuddly, but may hold its value. They are surprisingly affordable.

Although my personal favourite is the jade smoking pipe!!!!

i really really want to buy the smoking pipe and put down a bottle of whiskey. i mentioned it to my dad last night and all he said was

"its up to you but remember your mother is coming the same weekend"

Fluffy, get the papers, too, and keep them somewhere safe yourself. I've done that with both of my nieces and am planning on giving them to them both when they turn 18 (with whatever else I get them). :)

I also bought the littlest one a Royal Wedding stamp presentation pack from the PO. I know he's not here yet, but it's something else from the year he was born, plus they might be worth something one day. They've gone down to about £3-something now.
