a letter from you to the baby - with an update of what you've been doing, if and when you've seen the baby/child, an update on what you've been told about what the baby's doing. Buy a keepsake box to send with the first letter, and label it "Letters from Grandma". Or even a monthly diary note so when the baby grows up he/she will be able to read through them and find out more about his/her family - you could attach old photographs of your son/daughter when they were a child etc.
Hi Bella, every year Swarvoski bring out a crystal snowflake which is unique in design. Everyone has a lovely ribbon and a little tag with the year on. I buy one each for my daughters ( £45 ) but they truly are special, the idea was that in time when the have their own houses they will then have them. It's like a family ritual unwrapping them from the layers of tissue at christmas, my brother also collects little china trinket boxes for his daughter from Halcyon Days and they bring out a different edition every year. I like the idea that hopefully when I am no longer around they will still have these to do the same with their children ( hopefully ).
