Biopsy For Prostrate
9 Answers
I had my results yesterday at the hospital for my scan and blood test for my prostrate.
The scan was clear for my kidneys etc, but my blood test PSA for my prostrate read 11.9 which he said was quite high and another blood test was taken, so if its the same the consultant said that they would do a biopsy.
I know the procedure but is it painful?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I whether something is painful or not is entirely subjective. Healthcare professionals are in the habit of telling people that things may be "uncomfortable" but in my experience that just means painful! i presume they put you out for it anyway. If you are searching online, just to let you know the gland is call "prostate" lying down is called "prostrate"
Hi TRT
I have prostate cancer and prior to the discovery, I had had 2 biopsies via the back passage. When my PSA went up to 13.9 I had a third biopsy called a "LASER GUIDED TEMPLATE BIOPSY" which required a general anaesthetic. They took 59 cores from my prostate of which three were malignant. I would suggest that you ask what type of biopsy they intend to use. Not trying to scare you or anything like that, but my third biopsy I was told was the most definitive biopsy available. Please keep us posted. Good luck.

fbg40.......interesting post and i gather that you reside in the USA.
Template biopsy was first introduced in America and is gradually being introduced in a small number of specialist urological centres now in the UK. Evaluations of its effectiveness are very promising.
In the UK this is not routinely employed and only considered when rectal biopsies have come back negative despite a rising PSA as in your particular case.
Interesting technique not completely established in the UK.

Sorry, I live in the UK !! Had the biopsy carried out at Frimley Park Hospital and later had a prostatectomy also at FPH - by the Da Vinci robotic laparoscopic method. (What a mouthful !) I and 3 other gentlemen were "guinea pigs" at this hospital - the surgery was carried out by a surgeon who came over from France, where apparently, he carries out at least one of these procedures every day. It was very successful, pain free, had the op on the Monday was home by lunchtime on the Wednesday. All in all a satisfactory outcome. Have to see the oncologist on 8th October. PSA after the op was 0.3, at the last visit 6 months ago it was 0.1,so hoping it will be even better in October.
