Are In-Laws Regarded As Family

Just a query with a view to form filling, says on form I am filling in must be signed by doctor,etc etc someone who knows you but not a relative, can son-in-law brother-in-law sign!

I would count in-laws as family, you are related by marriage.

But if they have a different surname, who's to know?

Depending on what the form is you know you can get anyone that holds a license with the council to sign them?

Shop keeper, landlord...etc

I used to witness a lot of legal documents for my father-in-law before I married his son. After I changed my name, I couldn't sign any more.

erm if they have the same name - I wouldnt because it will lead to questions are they related and if you say Brother in law, etc - all it will do is cause head scratching and anxious murmuring.....

I tried to answer this earlier but AB's server threw a wobbly.

The Passport Agency's internal document for staff handling applications, says (in relation to countersignatories) " . . .not a relative of the applicant (this includes partners, in-laws, and step-parents)".

It's likely that other official bodies use the same criteria.
