I can understand the fear and anguish of an 80 year old coming home to find a robbery in progress and then being assaulted- absolutely terrible. I can understand him firing in self defence if there was a skirmish, what I can;t understand is him shooting someone in the back as they ran from his property after they had said they were pregnant and were very obviously...

That's how US law works, though. Guns are legal through the Second Amendment, as is their usage in legitimate self-defence.
Crimes against the person, such as mugging and burglary, are considered much more serious than they are in soft Britain. The burglars had already inflicted a serious, though admittedly not life-threatening, injury to the victim, and any court in the land would I'm sure adjudge that he genuinely feared for his life and was perfectly entitled to use deadly force to protect himself.
As stated above, the young man should consider himself lucky that he at least is still alive.

I notice that the article used American spelling for "defense" and "cooperating" but anyway, how can a claim of self-defence be used when the woman was running away? In this country, reasonable force can be used but if the threat no longer exists, if the assailant is running away for example, the victim cannot chase after him and beat him up.
In the Land of the Free, thecorbyloon it looks as if they can ! Its a license to assassinate as far as I can see. And her accomplice cannot possibly be guilty of murder, if somebody else had the gun. That person has made no secret of the fact that he killed the woman. We proved that point in Britain a long time ago.....let him have and Derek Bentley.
I must say that I am surprised that so many on here are defending the man who killed this female burglar.

The fact that she is female and that she was pregnant are totally irrelevant.
But, the fact that she was a burglar and also that she posed no immediate threat to the householder are relevant.
