He shot her, despite her telling him she was pregnant. He shot her in the back, she was unarmed but he still hasn't been charged by the Police !

I can understand the fear and anguish of an 80 year old coming home to find a robbery in progress and then being assaulted- absolutely terrible. I can understand him firing in self defence if there was a skirmish, what I can;t understand is him shooting someone in the back as they ran from his property after they had said they were pregnant and were very obviously...

SVEJK, the point I was trying to make in my example was that at some point, defence changes to attack and at that point, the law says it is no longer reasonable. In my house with a burglar in a confined space, it would be reasonable to feel threatened but not when I am chasing him down the garden to kill him.
ag, an astute observation. The man is a hero.
The man is most certainly NOT a hero. He might well be a victim, he might even be a perpetrator but a hero is one thing he isn't.
Why not? He's potentially saved other people from a similar fate. Good for him, I say.
Many would admire his courage kval and by definition, could be classed as a hero.
Sorry but I fail to see what is courageous about shooting someone fleeing in the back AgChristie. For sure he's made sure no-one else is going to get burgled by her but you simply cannot take the law into your own hands in such a way, it's the path to absolute vigilante disaster.
If the avoidance of other people being burgled is a motive to shoot them Naomi why do we not have the death penalty for theft?
a hero for shooting someone in the back - twice - while they're running away? Such courage.
NAOMI, do you think that all burglars should be killed?
kvalidir, burglary is not simple theft and it's a great mistake to think it is.

THECORBYLOON, if people who break into other people’s houses end up dead, I have no objection. Criminals choose to commit crime – and if they come unstuck they have only themselves to blame. I have no sympathy whatsoever. They take their chances.
Elderly man, outnumbered, attacked and left with a serious injury, victimised several times by these low lifes, saving others from a similar fate - I would say he has displayed courage...
If a burglar, caught in the act, were to hand himself over to the householder, you'd not be too bothered if he were beaten to death with a baseball bat?
If he were to hand himself over to the householder, why would he be beaten to death with a baseball bat?
you keep talking as though people are taking cool, reasoned decisions, which they're not.
Svejk, but these people think they would be taking cool, reasoned decisions - because they've never been in that situation - and hopefully never will be. ;o)
That's a very sweeping ( and inaccurate in my case) assumption Naomi. Don't rubbish other people's opinions in a vain attempt to prop up your own.
Who knows what frame of mind a householder may be in? Would it be okay for him to kill the burglar?
Disgraceful crime domestic burglary.
kvalidir, you've been in that situation? Really?
Exactly Naomi. Attack, rob and terrify a man in his own house, in a country of gunowners. You know the risks.
Whilst burglary can have a terrible effect upon a householder, is killing a fleeing burglar justified?
