Neither the BT Phone Book nor 192.com lists him but that might well mean that his phone number is ex-directory (as the majority of residential numbers now are) and that he's ticked the box to be excluded from the edited roll on his electoral registration form.
Draft letter:
"Dear Sir,
We are trying to contact an old friend, Alex Wotherspoon, who lived on Ardencraig Road, Glasgow over thirty years ago. We believe that he may now be living in the Carlisle area. If he (or anyone who knows him) would be kind enough to get in touch with us, we would be extremely grateful.
Yours in hope

Hi again Trixie , I've spoken to my uncle and he did know Jim Wiggins but hasn't seen him for a long while. He thinks he might be staying in Bellshill now - it's only a couple of miles from Viewpark and said Jim was very active in the Uddingston Masonic Lodge.
The contact details for the Lodge are :- Lodge St Bryde
4 Gardenside St
Uddingston
Glasgow, G71
Tel:01698 818919
www.stbryde.co.uk
That gives you some new leads to work on anyway and hopefully if you contact the Lodge they will be able to give you information on your friend.
Good luck with it.
