Sore Throat

I have a really sore throat today - it hurts when I speak and swallow (that fleshy part at the back of my mouth, not my pipes). I can't use Halls Soothers or Lockets or the like. A friend has recommended a spray called Difflam but it has NSAI. Now I usually avoid these because now and again, say every two or three years, I use a Ventolin inhaler for mild asthma that might come on after a cold. Dare I risk a couple of sprays of this Difflam on my throat for a couple of days do you think?

I gargle salt water...and take paracetomol xx

Thank you retrocop - I'll ask about that at the chemist at lunchtime. I've had a quick google and it doesn't mention NSAI so hopefully I'll be able to use it - thanks very much x

Thanks tinkerbell - I tried gargling last night but I need more practice - it came out of my nose! I was able to hold an ice cube against it for a while but there's no freezer at work.

Original Menthol Flavour: Ethanol, macrogol 300, propylene glycol, glycerol, cetylpyridinium chloride, saccharin sodium, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium hydroxide, flavouring (levomenthol) and purified water.

Cherry Flavour: Ethanol, macrogol 300, propylene glycol, glycerol, cetylpyridinium chloride, saccharin sodium, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium hydroxide, lactic acid, flavourings (cherry, cream, and levomenthol) and purified water.

Blackcurrant Flavour: Ethanol, macrogol 300, propylene glycol, glycerol, cetylpyridinium chloride, saccharin sodium, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sodium hydroxide, flavouring (levomenthol and blackcurrant) and purified water.

These are the active ingredients to Chloraseptic if you have worries.

Very few asthmatics have a reaction to NSAIDs.

Thanks Daffy - I wouldn't think of risking it if I suffered from asthma very often, but touch wood, it's once in a blue moon.

Yes.....no big deal in using Difflam or any other antiseptic spray................but I am not a fan of throat sprays for infected throats, as I think that they are useless and at best only sterilise the surface of the throat leaving the deeper infected areas untouched.

I would use Ibuprofen by mouth, but if you are not happy with this advice, then paracetamol.

Monitor the situation for the next 3 days.

Thanks all. I'm lucky with what I've got - almost everyone I know has had a really bad cold that's knocked them for six. I thought on Friday I was coming down with something but on Saturday I was fine. Yesterday morning I woke up and someone had used coarse sandpaper all over the fleshy bit in my mouth. Boots didn't have the spray. I'll carry on with the paracetamol and cold water for now... There are no white lumps and it's not looking too bad.

You could also try gargling with Cider Vinager, the one from a herbalist with the " mother " sediment still in. That's what I do when I get a sore throat and it always helps cure it. But you have to do it a few times a day.
