I have several grandchildren. My wife & I divorced and she remarried
but has no new children.
She has told our grandchildren to call her new husband Granddad
which I admit I am not comfortable with.
She insists that her husband is now an In Law Grandfather.

Is there such a thing & is she correct?

Personally, I don't think any child can have too many grandparents. If your wife has a new husband, it would be appropriate for the children to refer to him as Granddad, because he is married to their Grandmother. If I were her, I would drop the 'In Law' bit - who needs such labels!

Does it really matter whether they call him Granddad, as long as they also call you Granddad? Can one of you be Gramps or Grandpa?

Why are you not comfortable with it?
As per bedknobs, Step-grandfather (for official purposes)
optionally, "grandad #3"

In-laws I would always interpret to mean relations gained via your spouse.

All of this only remotely matter if you want to talk to people who don't know the inner workings of your family without having them misinterpret who is descended from whom.

Thanks everyone.

Tilly I'm probably just being over possessive. I always thought it was
a 'blood line' issue.
yeah so long as they dont call him ... Jimmy

My mother had a step mother and we had no idea what to call her
we settled on my mother's step mother.

I am an uncle in law and get called uncle - and quite honestly it is better than white honky ( wh they call their father )
My step son call my parents by their first names in normal conversation.
But, when asked who they are I relation to him, he says "step-grandparents". This was unprompted, and we thought, very sweet.
In every way apart form being blood related, they are grandparents
