Fantastic.......I saw the behaviour of children at school who were smacked at home.......they learn that violence and hurting is acceptable....

I was smacked often....did it harm me?...You bet it did.....!

Did I smack my children?....My daughter never....my son once and to this day I regret my loss of control...... :-(

I don't know if my parents smacking us did my brother any harm but I remember being so upset watching him being hit and, from a very young age, trying to stop it. Also seeing a boy caned by a teacher who had lost his temper....I am still horrified by it all these years later. Hitting other people does no good but explaining why one shouldn't do something develops a real understanding of the reasons why an action should not taken.

I'd be ashamed if the only way I could bring up children was by hitting them.......who on earth thinks that hitting anyone, especially children, is a good thing.....it's a dreadful weakness....shockingly bad parenting.....x

When my 3-yr-old grandson (now 8) hit me because I had picked him up to talk to him regarding his wanton destruction (he hit it with a stick) of a carefully-raised and cosseted, rare clematis - my automatic reaction was to smack him back, sharply, and legal or illegal I would do the same again. Not enforceable and sometimes children need a smack.

Hitting or beating a child is wrong, but gently smacking them on the bot or hand is highly justified and in many cases NEEDED.

Our society is missing two key elements...DISCIPLINE and RESPECT.

I've been to many continents and seen first hand that the old values of respect, disciple and family bonding are alive and what molds and binds society together. Yes if they're naughty then a little smack which doesnt hurt but is more the action which teaches them the difference between right and wrong.

Society was better when we had 3 generations living together, where morals, discipline and values were the order of the day. What do we have now? Kids who hardly know their parents, secluding themselves in their little bubbles surrounded by tech and parents don't even bother try and actually allow this? Wow! We're quick to throw mummy/granny in the care home once we find a partner and what shocks me is the power we're giving to kids. The other day my friend in the states told be her son done something and she went for him and he started swearing, threatening here that if she touches him he'll send her to jail and sue her? What The Funicular? What's next? Mom, I'm going to shoot you?

And before any hand wringers start that kids need a kind word, have any of you tried to bring up a few feral kids, no dad at home who are wreaking havoc, at home and on the streets?

It's another nail in the coffin for a well and happy balanced happy society. R.I.P.

I was smacked as kid and no I don't think it did me any harm....but perhaps it did (who knows!) because I've never smacked by kids. I've always found a withering stare, or the most powerful phrase known to man of "I'm disapointed" have always worked wonders.

My mother didn't need to hit me to demand respect. There are other options to discipline children.
