If you have assets of more than £23,540 .....usually you have to pay the whole amount of care home fees yourself.
1944....my mother owned a house (which had to be sold) and had a healthy bank account. All of this went to pay her care home fees until she only had the amount Ginge has posted.
Then she gets help with the fees and contributes some herself until she has about £14,000 left which she can keep....unless the rules change before then.....
I think that sometimes the type of care needed may make a difference but I'm not sure about that as my mother has Alzheimer's which isn't considered an illness....x
Additional payments that people receive are called the Nursing Care Contribution. This payment is made by the NHS to cover provision of care which can only be provided by, or supervised by, a qualified nurse. It came into being when long stay places in NHS hospitals were closed and the intention was to enable other types of residential care to offer places to people who needed more qualified nursing care than they would normally provide. It is not means tested.
