My son thinks his wife divorced him in the early 1990s but as he has not been in the country he did not get any papers. He has met a lovely girl and would like to marry. How can he find out if he was divorced?

His local Sherriff's court ( if in Scotland , or English equivalent ) will have a record.......

I suppose in Ireland the Magistrate's Court would be the equivalent of the Sheriff's Court? I'll enquire there tomorrow. Thanks.
In England you cannot divorce without proof that the other party was notified i.e. their signature or having the papers served on them by an approved person
Actually Suzyboo you are wrong,I divorced my husband without his knowledge as he had moved abroad without anyones knowledge, even his parents were unaware of where he was. I had to submit proof to the court that no-one knew of his whereabouts(I got a letter to that effect from his parents and his last known address). He actually visited his parents a couple of years ago to find out if he was divorced as he wanted to marry again abroad. You have to wait 5 years before you can do this though, any less and you need the other parties written consent.
In that case I should be able to sue my solicitor for wrong information and finally get divorced from the man I cannot find
