You wear whatever you like ( having closely observed the guests at the other 4 Christenings in the church at the same time)- unless of course it is a society do in which case a big hat seems to be appropriate. As to gift - as the baby is a godchild then a more personal present -such as an engraved locket/bangle -plus the bible wuld be nice. If your sister is flush ( the lowest amount you can buy is 100 worth) then premium bonds are a good way of giving money to a child and can be added to with each passing celebration.
Royal Mint produce special sets of coins with the year of birth ' see their website, or get her a set of commemorative stamps. Daughter got several silver piggy banks, we opened a PO book for her. Other good ideas I've heard of are Bank Accounts, Premium Bonds, and National Saving Certificates. Another nice gift is something like a charm bracelet to wear when she's old enough to look after it [then each birthday you're never stuck for a pressy!] or the Beatrix Potter ceramics are good - keep the box too - it'll add to the value. As to clothing; wifey & I disagreed, I wanted something smart, practical & that she could wear again [I lost!] she had a Christening gown that now, 8 years later is gathering dust in the back of the wardrobe. As the saying goes, very nice but neither use nor ornament!
